Ms. Blanchette grew up in Alexandria and, after working in Fairfax for six years, is glad to have the opportunity to return to Alexandria.

Growing up, she was passionate about animals, nature, and the environment, so, it was no surprise to her family when she went to Virginia Tech (Go Hokies!!!) and got a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources Recreation and a Minor in Forestry. Her goal was to be a National Park Ranger. She worked in various Virginia parks during summer breaks. During her last year at Tech, she helped a graduate student conduct her research on visitors of The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. (Her mother didn’t like this, because she was canoeing with alligators just a few feet away.)

“How did Janelle go from nature girl to a paper-pushing job?”  Basically, she wanted to be a Park Ranger because it would put her in contact with people, as opposed to just trees and animals. As a Park Ranger, she would teach visitors about the park, the environment, and the importance on their conservation and preservation. That desire to teach and work with people is now satisfied by teaching clients about and helping them through the litigation process.

She started working part-time at her mother’s firm the summer after she graduated while she was waiting to hear from the National Park Service. She quickly became interested in the legal concepts and was eager to keep learning. She enjoys helping clients understand difficult legal concepts that sound so foreign to them and helping lawyers translate them for jurors.

“How could a young college graduate stand to work with her mother?” She feels unbelievably lucky and thankful that she grew out of that “I-don’t-want-to-be-seen-in-public-with-my-mom” stage. She anticipates Sandra’s thinking, so their conversations can take half as long as they otherwise would. (Note to Clients: Do not do that in your deposition.) When clients have a conversation with the two of them together, they might say the exact same thing in unison.
