Don't make the mistake of not having the most important car insurance you need to protect your family.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage -- have you ever heard of it? I hope you have, but lots of insurance agents do not tell you about it and, even if you ask, they may try to sell you too little. But, take my word for it: it's the best protection you can buy for your family if an irresponsible driver injures you, especially if you are very seriously injured.
Guess what: Virginia does not require drivers to have car insurance. So, the careless driver who hits you may have nothing - no assets, no insurance -- with which to pay you back for the harms he caused. That is where your own UM/UIM coverage comes into play. And, you should have as much of it as you can afford.
An article I wrote about UM/UIM insurance coverage was published in the July 12, 2012 edition of the Alexandria Times. Here's a link to the article. (It's on page 21 of this pdf print edition.)
